House, Behavior, and Leash Training?? For A Puppy?

Ok, i need to know how to train my 4 month old puppy how to do all of this, he was doing pretty well, but not anymore. The numbers, (1.) are the catergory, and the (*) are his problem with that category. I want you to tell me EVERYTHING you know under that category.

Here are your answers, exactly as you asked…

1. House Training
*Sometimes refuses to go outside.
~He’s young. He doesn’t understand. Keep showing him what to do and where to do it. Do you expect a 2 year old to potty train in 1 day? Never to have an accident? No, of course not. Same with puppies.
*Will come IMMEDIATLY back in and pee on my couch.
~Keep him on a leash, tied to you all the time. When you come in, stand by the door and don’t let him near the couch. As soon as he starts to go, rush him back out and praise him.
*I am “crate training” him.
~GOOD! Be sure you’re doing it correctly. If you do it wrong, you can traumatize him. Get a book from the library.
*Yes, i give him treats, and praise every time he goes to the bathroom outside.
~GOOD! Keep at it. Expect accidents for the entire first year.
Yes, YEAR!!!

2. Behavior
*He is Wild, and doesnt sit in my lap anymore.
~In “human years” he’s a toddler. How still does the adverage 2 year old sit? Not very still. He needs daily walks. Keep in mind, some breeds need very long walks.
*He sniffs around at everything
~He’s learning. Dogs learn every thing through their noses and mouths. Like a toddler puts everything in their mouths.
*He tries to eat EVERYTHING off of the floor.
~Again, learning. Mouthing and chewing are an important part of his mental development. Offer him stuff to chew (toys, chew sticks, etc) pick up stuff you don’t want chewed.
*He doesnt really understand the word “No”.
~He’s a baby. Babies don’t understand no. Also, with dogs, as soon as they outgrow babyhood they hit teenager right away. So, just when they start understanding “NO” they start ignoring you. Just a warning, LOL!
*I want him to learn basic tricks.
~Get the book “Dog Tricks for Dummies”. Lots of cute things to start teaching the youngest puppies.

So, just to be clear…
~He’s a baby.
~He’s still learning.
~He needs lots of repetition, patience and understanding for the next year to year and a half of his life. Yes, YEAR!!! (Good thing he’s so cute, huh?)
~He needs toys he can chew and owner’s who pick up their valuables and keep them out of reach.
~He needs to be on a leash when he’s not crated so he can be watched and run outside when necessary. It also keeps messes off furniture.

There are puppy classes you can take. Petco and Petsmart have a good puppy program.
